Melrose is a beautiful city, but during the holidays, it truly dazzles!

Back in Christmas of 1999, Tracey Cruikshank and Sandy Dixon were on a mission—driving around in search of the perfect place to call home. That’s when they stumbled upon a hidden gem. Melrose decked out in twinkling lights and festive cheer, it radiated a warmth that went beyond the decorations. Then, as if by fate, they saw the sign: “Melrose: One Community Open to All.” That was it. They knew they had found their place.

Eager to be part of something special, Tracey wasted no time immersing herself in the heart of the community. She started with the PTO at her son’s school but that was just the beginning. Over the years, her involvement has only deepened. Today, she’s a powerhouse of kindness, serving on the Board of Directors for the Food Drive, playing an active role in the MAAV Walk Committee, and co-founding both MORE and EPIC—organizations that make a real difference in people’s lives.

When the pandemic turned the world upside down, Tracey and her son, Gabe, didn’t sit still. They got to work—picking up food for the Food Drive, delivering it to those in need, and even preparing meals for the community freezer. In a time of uncertainty, they became a beacon of hope for local families.

And because making an impact is just what she does, Tracey recently took on another role: board member of the Melrose Education Fund Committee.

But let’s talk about her other full-time passion: shaping young minds. For 34 years, Tracey has been a devoted elementary teacher, and for the last 23 years, she’s worked as a special needs teacher in Stoneham. Her dedication, patience, and heart have touched countless lives, leaving a legacy of love and learning.

When she’s not giving back, Tracey feeds her adventurous spirit. A semester in France sparked a love for travel, and she’s since explored 12 countries across Europe, embracing different cultures and perspectives. Next on her list? The great Pacific Northwest, as she sets out to discover more of the U.S.

Closer to home, her happy places are simple yet fulfilling: a peaceful walk in the woods, getting lost in a good book, cheering on Gabe and his teammates, snuggling with her two adorable kitties, and her cherished annual trip to Bar Harbor.

A proud champion of women’s sports and female leaders — both in Melrose and beyond — Tracey also appreciates the little quirks that make her city unique. Case in point? Melrose boasts ten pizza shops (and you can bet she has a favorite!).

Now, here’s a personal note. I’ve known Tracey all her life — she’s one of my 22 first cousins. I used to babysit her! And let me tell you, she’s the real deal: thoughtful, kind, and endlessly dedicated to making the world a better place. Melrose is lucky to have her.

Tracey Cruikshank is not just a woman of Melrose — she’s a force of nature, a giver, a leader, and a truly remarkable soul.
