Engine 2 Fire Station Closes; Reconstruction Begins

Earlier this month, Engine 2 was relocated to Fire Headquarters on Main Street, marking the first step in Phase 1 of the Public Safety Buildings Project in Melrose.

During construction, the two vehicles normally assigned to Engine 2, the fire station on Tremont Street, will be temporarily housed between the Central Station (on Main Street) and Engine 3 (on East Foster Street) to ensure full emergency coverage continues across the city.

The Engine 2 building has served Melrose since 1929, protecting generations of residents. After nearly a century of service, the building will soon be replaced with a modern facility designed to meet the needs of today’s firefighters and the community.

The new station will include:

The second floor will feature eight dormitory rooms, a kitchen, dining room, laundry room, fitness room, multiple restrooms, and a community room, creating a functional and comfortable space for the firefighters who serve our city around the clock.

The public safety buildings project involves reconstructing or renovating all four of Melrose's public safety buildings - three fire stations and the police station - in three phases. Read more about the project here.

Before demolition begins, we’re taking one last look inside the Tremont Street station — a building filled with decades of service, stories, and dedication.

Thank you to the firefighters who served here and the generations of Melrose residents who supported them.

Here’s a look inside the Tremont Street station as we bid farewell.
