Last week, a lovely rededication ceremony at Pine Banks Park unveiled a replacement memorial plaque at the track honoring George H. Cray and his remarkable 41 years of service as Superintendent of Pine Banks, from 1905 to 1946.

Forty-one years! Imagine the dedication, hard work, and pride it takes to care for a place that means so much to so many people.

And Pine Banks looked quite different back then. The park had a small animal collection, greenhouses and flower gardens where over 15,000 plants were planted each year, baseball and softball fields, and a pond for summer swimming and winter ice skating. The Log Cabin recreation area brought people together for movies, games, sports, picnics, and parties.

Pine Banks was and is a place to play, explore, and make memories across generations.

One remarkable chapter came after the devastating 1938 hurricane, when more than 500 trees were uprooted or damaged. Some salvaged pines became lumber for repairs, while firewood was distributed to families in need. Even in the aftermath of disaster, the park helped bring the community together.

George H. Cray also created the annual Santa Claus visit, bringing holiday joy to generations of local children and families. His legacy continued through his son, George F. Cray, who also served as superintendent and continues today.

For years, this plaque, which was dedicated in May 1956, has been missing. Now, this missing piece of history has come home!

One of the most touching moments of last week's ceremony came when George's grandsons, Nick and Jamie, shared their memories of growing up at Pine Banks and what this special place has meant to their family. It was a wonderful reminder that behind every public space are people who dedicate their lives to making it a place where generations can gather, play, compete, and create memories.

The ceremony brought together public officials from Melrose and Malden, a Pine Banks trustee, Malden's Tree Warden, other officials, family members, and friends.

The beautiful new memorial plaque and flag look fantastic and are a fitting tribute to a man whose 41 years of service helped shape Pine Banks into the treasured community space it is today.

This is about so much more than replacing a plaque. It's about honoring years of service, celebrating a family that helped care for a beloved community space, and preserving the stories that connect generations of Melrose residents.

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone helping restore this memorial, especially Nick and Jamie for preserving their great-grandfather's legacy.

The Cray family's legacy lives on, not just in a plaque, but in every child who plays on the fields, every athlete who runs the track, and every family that enjoys this beautiful park. The next time you walk through Pine Banks, think about the gardens, the animals, the pond, the gatherings at the Log Cabin, the neighbors helping one another after a hurricane, and the children waiting for Santa. So much history lives in this park!

Melrose, this is what community is all about: remembering, honoring, and preserving the stories that make our towns special. What a wonderful way to honor the past while preserving its memory for future generations.

Editor's Note: Nancy has been working on recreating and reinstalling this plaque since she noticed it was missing over a year ago. Thank you for your dedication, Nancy, to restoring this piece of community history!
