Debora Penachio and Cappa's Trackside Kitchen
Written and Photographed by Nancy Clover

If you’ve ever had breakfast at Cappa's Trackside Kitchen, you already know something special is happening there. And a lot of that magic starts with Debora Penachio.
Debora is the matriarch of this beloved Melrose diner, and she sets the tone every single day — welcoming customers, keeping the coffee flowing, and making sure everyone feels like they belong.
But what makes Cappa’s truly special is the family behind the counter.
It’s not unusual to see three generations working side by side. Debora works alongside her sister Donna, her daughter Charlotte, her niece Veronica, and even the newest recruit — her 12-year-old grandson Robert, already learning the family business.
Where else can you get pancakes and a life lesson about hard work at the same time?
Located just steps from the commuter rail at 1 Grove Street, Cappa’s Trackside has become a morning ritual for many Melrose residents. People come for the classic breakfast and lunch menu, the reasonable prices, and of course...the bottomless coffee.

And then there are the pancakes. The blueberry pancakes have loyal fans all over the city, and the cinnamon bun pancakes might give you a sugar rush...but they are absolutely worth it.
But the real reason people keep coming back isn’t just the food. It’s the feeling.
The staff greets you like an old friend, the conversations bounce from table to table, and before you know it you’re part of the morning crowd. Debora has created more than a restaurant — she’s created a place where community happens.
In a world full of chain restaurants and rushed mornings, places like Cappa’s remind us how special local businesses can be.
So the next time you stop in for pancakes and coffee, take a moment to appreciate the woman behind it all.
And women like Debora — who quietly build community one cup of coffee and one conversation at a time — make Melrose stronger.
