Sometimes the most powerful change begins with pure serendipity — an unexpected moment that quietly shifts everything.

Ten years ago, Jeana McNeil and her husband Sam wandered through the Melrose Farmers Market and stopped to chat with members of the local recycling committee. That simple conversation sparked something bigger than anyone could have imagined.

Jeana has always been deeply committed to environmental sustainability and community engagement — so joining Zero Waste Melrose felt like a natural fit. What began as volunteer involvement quickly grew into meaningful leadership. She worked on multiple initiatives, including helping advance the city’s plastic bag ban — gaining firsthand insight into how local government works and how real change happens.

Today, Zero Waste Melrose partners with local organizations and Melrose High School students to host beloved community events like the annual citywide swap, holiday swaps, and jewelry exchanges — creative, joyful ways to reduce waste while building connection.

Jeana now leads the Single Use Plastics initiative, collaborating closely with residents, city officials, and local businesses to reduce waste and strengthen recycling efforts.

Her leadership style? Bold and optimistic. She starts with the belief that we can do this — and then figures out how. For her, public perception and perceived barriers aren’t roadblocks; they’re opportunities to educate, inspire, and rethink what’s possible.

Professionally, Jeana brings a background in market research — understanding trends, behaviors, and community needs — skills she seamlessly applies to sustainability work. She is proud to be part of Zero Waste, creating measurable, meaningful environmental impact right here in Melrose.

Beyond her advocacy, you’ll find her outdoors — hiking, biking, tending her garden — or immersed in art and music. Her love for beauty and the natural world fuels her drive to protect it.

Through her professional expertise and tireless community involvement, Jeana McNeil is helping shape a more sustainable, connected future for Melrose — proof that sometimes one conversation at a farmers market can grow into lasting change.
