Cascade Falls
Written and Photographed by Nancy Clover

Melrose has the cutest waterfall – Cascade Falls.

It is a half mile walk from Goodyear Ave. Cross the footbridge into the woods, follow the yellow trail markers. The trail is not very steep, as Goodyear Ave has a sharp incline so most of the uphill walking is done for you. Street parking is available.
The path is well marked and maintained - rocky in places so watch your footing. You will hear the falls before you see them.
The route leads you to Cascade Falls, a 40-foot high cliff with multiple chutes of water. The tallest plunge is 16 feet off a giant wall of rock.
If you are more daring, you can walk to the top of the falls.
The waterfall is at the eastern edge of the Fells, between Melrose Rock and Black Rock. It is called a horsetail type waterfall because the water maintains contact with the bedrock in most places.
The trail was well utilized today with families and dog walkers on leases. Nice to see people enjoying nature. Great place to walk off the holiday treats!!
You can also pick up a second trail - Cross Fells Trail from the trail head for those who want a longer walk.
