What is one place in the community could help you rebuild your strength after illness, teach your child to swim, help a senior stay active, and connect neighbors who might never otherwise meet?
For thousands of Melrose residents, that place is the Melrose Family YMCA. And one of the people helping make it all happen is Bernadette Farrell.
Bernadette Farrell is a longtime health and wellness leader who has helped shape many of the fitness, health, and community programs that serve Melrose and surrounding communities.
Bernadette grew up in Watertown and was always active, playing sports throughout middle and high school. Her love of movement never faded — she has completed mini-triathlons and even 50-mile bike rides. She firmly believes that staying active improves your quality of life at every stage.
When she took time off to raise her children, she began bringing them to the Y for swim lessons. What started as a parent bringing kids to a program quickly turned into something more. She began volunteering, became a certified instructor in swimming and water aerobics, trained as a personal trainer, and in 2014 officially joined the staff at the Melrose branch.
Today Bernadette serves as Senior Program / Health and Wellness Director and Association Health and Wellness Team Leader.
In these roles she helps design, lead, and oversee health, fitness, and community programming at the Melrose YMCA while also contributing to wellness initiatives across the entire YMCA of Metro North system. Her work centers on the YMCA’s core mission: healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility.
On any given day she may be:
- Managing fitness, wellness, and enrichment programs
- Supervising health and wellness staff and trainers
- Developing community health initiatives
- Coordinating programs with healthcare partners and nonprofits
- Supporting sports, exercise, and prevention programs for people of all ages
And that’s just part of it.
The Melrose YMCA offers more than 90 exercise classes, including popular water aerobics programs. Bernadette has also helped lead important evidence-based health initiatives such as LIVESTRONG at the YMCA – a 12-week program helping cancer survivors rebuild strength and confidence after treatment - and Cardiac Rehab Maintenance – exercise programs that support people continuing recovery after cardiac rehabilitation.
Bernadette often emphasizes that these programs are about community as much as recovery. Participants don’t just regain strength — they build friendships and support networks that last long after the program ends.

Beyond health programs, she has helped launch and manage youth sports, including an association-wide youth basketball league, and she supports community events like the Melrose YMCA’s Spooky Sprint 5K, which raises funds for local programs.
The YMCA also partners with the city on initiatives that strengthen the broader community, including downtown events like pop-up markets, the winter farmers market, and other gatherings that bring residents together.
For Bernadette, the best part of the job is the people.
She loves the environment of the Y and the relationships she has built over the years. Watching members gain confidence and strength as they work toward their goals is what motivates her every day. She is quick to credit the passionate staff she works with for the success of the programs.
One of her biggest challenges is balancing the administrative responsibilities of running such a large operation while maintaining an open-door policy. Bernadette wants members to feel comfortable sharing concerns, ideas, and requests. Meeting everyone’s expectations isn’t always easy, but she continually works to find that balance.
This year is particularly meaningful, as the YMCA celebrates 175 years of service. Bernadette is proud that the Melrose branch continues to thrive. Major improvements have recently been completed, including a new fitness center, elevator, and ADA-accessible front entrance — and she is already planning the next round of updates.
Because for Bernadette Farrell, the YMCA is more than a gym. It’s a place where people come to heal, grow stronger, meet friends, and build a healthier community together — and she is helping lead that mission every single day.
Melrose is stronger because of leaders like Bernadette Farrell.
