Linda Hedetniemi

Some of the most powerful forces in a community aren’t the loudest voices—they’re the steady, compassionate ones who show up again and again, lifting others without ever asking for recognition. Linda Hedetniemi is one of those remarkable women.
I first met Linda as a participant in the YMCA’s LiveSTRONG program, a free program for cancer survivors. On the days when motivation was hard to find, there she was—smiling, encouraging, and gently pushing all of us forward (even when we didn’t think we had it in us). What makes Linda extraordinary is not just her kindness, but the depth behind it. During the pandemic, she faced her own cancer journey largely alone due to visitor restrictions. Instead of letting that experience isolate her, she turned it into a purpose. After completing the program herself, she returned as a peer leader—offering the support and camaraderie she once needed. She doesn’t just guide participants—she meets them where they are, helps them believe in themselves, and yes, sometimes lovingly “nudges” them to go a little further than they thought possible.

After a 36-year career as a librarian in Lynn, Linda’s commitment to community didn’t slow down — it expanded. In Melrose, she became a driving force behind the Friends of the Melrose Public Library. From organizing the semiannual book sale to sorting, pricing, and setting up hundreds of donated books (with help from her grandson Jack), she helps ensure the library continues to thrive as a hub of learning and connection.
And if you think her impact stops there, it doesn’t. Linda brings the same curiosity and courage to her personal life. She has traveled the world — from China and Cambodia to Italy, Vietnam, Panama, Ireland, and Morocco. On her 69th birthday, she climbed Huayna Picchu, the breathtaking peak overlooking Machu Picchu — because why not? She’ll be the first to tell you she’s an over-packer who still manages to leave things behind on her trips — but maybe that’s part of her magic: always moving forward, never weighed down.
She is deeply proud of her family, her grandchildren, and friendships that have stood the test of time—including one walking partner she continues to meet three times a week for 55 years. She also joyfully claims she’s eaten at just about every restaurant between here and Boston—an accomplishment many of us can admire!
Linda Hedetniemi may not seek the spotlight, but her impact is everywhere—in the lives she’s strengthened, the community spaces she’s enriched, and the quiet encouragement she gives so freely. She reminds us that resilience, generosity, and joy can ripple outward in ways we may never fully see — but deeply feel.
Melrose is stronger because of women like Linda.
