Some people don’t just serve their community — they help shape it for generations.

Meet Gail Infurna.

For more than two decades, Gail has been a steady, trusted presence in Melrose city government. Representing Ward 5 for 22 years, she brought experience, institutional knowledge, and a deep understanding of what makes this community work.

In 2018, during a pivotal moment for the city when Mayor Dolan stepped down, Gail stepped up — making history as Melrose’s first woman mayor. For Gail, it was never about the title. It was about ensuring the city continued to move forward with stability, integrity, and care for its residents.

Gail grew up in Malden and graduated from the Malden Hospital School of Nursing. She went on to spend 25 years at MelroseWakefield Hospital — an experience that deeply shaped her leadership style. She leads with compassion, listens carefully, weighs decisions thoughtfully, and always puts people first—whether at City Hall or out in the community.

Her commitment didn’t end with her time as mayor. Gail continues to give back in countless ways: serving on the Traffic Commission, the Chamber of Commerce Board, and the Fitch Home; volunteering at flu clinics; chairing the Elderly & Disabled Tax Relief Fund; and serving as a MelroseWakefield Healthcare Trustee. She is the definition of someone who makes a difference—often quietly, but always meaningfully.

Gail is proud of her lifelong focus on the greater good of the community. She loves Melrose and is grateful to have played a role in making it what it is today — and she’s equally grateful to the many volunteers who step up every day to strengthen this city.

And when she’s not giving back? She loves to travel—travel, travel! And for a wonderful local tradition, Gail has been playing the trumpet at the Memorial Day celebration since 1988.

Gail Infurna reminds us that leadership isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s consistent, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in service. And that kind of leadership leaves a lasting mark.
