March is Women’s History Month — a time to honor the women who have shaped our communities, challenged injustice, led movements, built institutions, and carried history forward.

Here in Melrose, we begin with remembrance.

At City Hall stands the Women’s Service Tree Memorial, 562 Main Street — a living tribute to the women of Melrose who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. A Magnolia tree rises beside a polished black granite stone, dedicated on Veterans Day in 2014, through the generosity of the City of Melrose and the Melrose Garden Club.

At its base, these words are etched in stone:

“Honoring the service and sacrifice of Melrose women in the U.S. Armed Forces while inspiring future generations to answer the call. Past · Present · Future.”

Just down Franklin Street, at Faith Evangelical Church, a stained-glass window of Queen Esther glows with quiet strength — honoring the mothers, wives, and daughters who gave their sons, husbands, and brothers in service to their country. It is a reminder that courage takes many forms.

As we begin this month of celebration, we remember women have always answered the call — in uniform, in leadership, in sacrifice, in love.
