Think back to your very first job...now imagine never leaving — not because you had to, but because you loved it that much.

That’s the story of Diane Wall.

Diane began at the Melrose Public Library as a high school freshman, working as a page — the person who carefully reshelves books and keeps the stacks in order. What started as an after-school job became a calling. She worked through college (earning a degree in art history!), stepped into every department, and said “yes” wherever she was needed. Eleven years ago, she was promoted to Assistant Director — and she’s still pitching in wherever the day takes her.

Over 55 years, she has seen it all. Card catalogs to automation. Print-only to digital resources. A temporary move to the Beebe School. The excitement of reopening with a beautiful new addition. Through every shift and transformation, one thing remained constant: her belief that the library is the heart of the community.

Ask her how someone stays in one job for more than five decades, and she doesn’t talk about longevity — she talks about people. The dedicated staff. The committed volunteers. The loyal patrons who treasure everything from daily newspapers to lending laptops. She’s watched children race through the doors for story time, grow up, return as parents — and then as grandparents — passing along the joy of reading to the next generation.

Her favorite moments? The energy of events. A buzzing jewelry swap. Book clubs — both virtual and in person. Author nights filled with lively conversation. The library isn’t just shelves and books — it’s connection, celebration, and lifelong learning.

So how much longer will she stay?

“As long as I’m having a ball.”

And judging by the sparkle in her story, that could be a while.

Here’s to devotion. Here’s to community. Here’s to women whose quiet leadership shapes generations.
