Delayed Porchfest Still Draws Enthusiastic Crowds

Rain on Saturday afternoon delayed this year’s Porchfest until Sunday, scrambling bands’ schedules and porch assignments at the last minute. Despite the schedule change, however, Melrosians of all ages came out to enjoy one of the city’s favorite new traditions.

Saturday’s rain gave way to perfect autumn weather on Sunday, clear and slightly cool. In many neighborhoods, Porchfest performances formed part of a block party with closed-off streets, lemonade stands, and even grills, Italian ice, and food trucks at some porches. Idle Hands Brewery held Oktoberfest at the Beebe Estate on Sunday afternoon, bringing people out to enjoy beer, the La Qchara food truck, and music there as well.

Crowds gathered on Bellevue Street to see former U.S. Senator Scott Brown with his band, the Diplomats, while others came to see unique acts like the all-saxophone band The Saxyderms on Vinton Street. Hannah’s Brewing Company featured performances on their patio, allowing patrons to enjoy music while sampling their drinks. And the sounds of music of all types carried through much of the city, allowing residents to follow their ears to the nearest performance.
